The English captured the French port Mahe which was of great importance to Hyder Ali. So, he protested and declared war against British. In 1781 the Britsh army under Sir Eyre Coote defeated Hyder Ali at Port Novo in 1782. Hyder Ali died of cancer. So, Tipu Sultan continued the war. In 1784, he signed the Treaty of Mangalore with the English by which the conquered territories were restored to both the parties.
