Question

Hydrochloric acid although a covalent molecule yet it is a good conductor of current. Explain.

Solution

Properties of a covalent molecule:

  1. Covalent compounds have low melting and boiling points.
  2. They have low fusion enthalpy and low vaporization.
  3. Covalent compounds are more flammable compare to ionic compounds.
  4. These compounds usually do not carry electricity.
  5. But, in solution of hydrochloric acid, the acid ionizes to give H+ and CI- ions.
  6. Hydronium ions move towards the negative electrode and Chloride ions move towards the positive electrode which conducts the current.
