Solution

It is the basic characteristic of a compound that its properties are entirely different from its constituent elements. Water is a compound made up of hydrogen and oxygen, where hydrogen is a highly inflammable gas and oxygen is a supporter of combustion but water is used to extinguish fire.

During a chemical combination the product formed has totally different chemical properties and thus it fails to retain its original properties and same is the case of water as it has different properties from its constituents and thus it extinguishes fire.
