Question

Hydrogen gas is not evolved when metals react with nitric acid. Give a reason

Open in App
Solution

Metals reacting with Nitric acid:

  • When there is a reaction between metal and Nitric acid(HNO3) , Hydrogen gas doesn't evolve during the reaction process.
  • This happens because, Nitric acid acts as a strong oxidizing agent and hence the Hydrogen gas produced during the reaction with metal gets oxidized to H2O, hence there happens production of no hydrogen gas.
  • Instead, it evolves nitric oxides such asNO2,NOetc during the reaction.
  • Example: When a Silver metal reacts with Nitric acid (HNO3)to give N2OandH2O.

Ag(s)(Silver)+2HNO3(aq)(Nitricacid)AgNO3(s)(Silvernitrate)+NO2(g)(Nitrogendioxide)+H2O(l)(Water)

Hence, hydrogen gas is not evolved when metals react with Nitric acid.
