Question

Hydrogen is manufactured by ‘Bosch process’.
How can you obtain hydrogen from a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen gas can be separated from the mixture of CO and hydrogen by using ammonical cuprous chloride solution. When we dissolve the mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in ammonical cuprous solution, carbon monoxide combines with chloride solution.

Chemical reaction:

CuCl+CO+2H2OCuCl.CO.2H2O

Hydrogen is left alone in the mixture.
