Question

Hydrogen, obtained by the electrical decomposition of water was combined with chlorine to produce 62.5 g of hydrogen chloride. Calculate the mass (in g) of water decomposed ( rounded to the nearest integer).
2H2O2H2+O2
H2+Cl22HCl

Open in App
Solution

The reactions are as follows:
2H2O2H2+O2
H2+Cl22HCl
One mole of water produces 2 moles of HCl.
Hence, the mass of water decomposed to obtain 62.5 g of HCl is 182×36.5×62.5=15 g.
