Hydroponics:
Hydroponics is the technique of growing the plants in a nutrient medium without soil.
Disadvantages of hydroponics:
Even though hydroponics has been a successful technique for the commercial production of plants, many plants are still grown on land because of following reasons:
● The initial cost of setting up is very high. Only high quality crops that have high market value makes the cultivation economically feasible.
● It is a cumbersome process as frequent input of nutrients and air along with proper circulation is required.
● Such plants grown in laboratory conditions are susceptible to environmental conditions and require special care.
Cultivation of crops in soil:
Soil is a reservoir of nutrients. Although addition of manures and fertilisers are required at intervals, the techniques involved in cultivation on soil are comparatively less cumbersome. Thus, on a large scale, plants are grown on land instead of hydroponic technique.
