Hypoxia is a condition in which less energy is available to the tissues because of a shortage of oxygen in the tissues. It is of two types:
Artificial hypoxia: It results due to a shortage of oxygen in the air at high altitudes and causes mountain sickness. It is characterised by breathlessness, headache, nausea and vomiting.
Anaemic hypoxia: It results from reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood due to anaemia (low haemoglobin content in the blood) or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Hypoxemia is the condition wherein there is less oxygen transport by the blood, and this results in less availability of oxygen to tissues, which is hypoxia.
