We have,
$(\frac{5}{8} p^{4} + 2 p^{2} + \frac{5}{8}) + (\frac{1}{8} - 17 p + \frac{9}{8} p^{2}) + (p^{5} - p^{3} + 7) = \frac{5}{8} p^{4} + 2 p^{2} + \frac{5}{8} + \frac{1}{8} - 17 p + \frac{9}{8} p^{2} + p^{5} - p^{3} + 7$
On combining the like terms,
$= p^{5} + \frac{5}{8} p^{4} - p^{3} + (2 + \frac{9}{8}) p^{2} - 17 p + (\frac{5}{8} + \frac{1}{8} + 7) = p^{5} + \frac{5}{8} p^{4} - p^{3} + (\frac{16 + 9}{8}) p^{2} - 17 p + (\frac{5 + 1 + 56}{8}) = p^{5} + \frac{5}{8} p^{4} - p^{3} + \frac{25}{8} p^{2} - 17 p + \frac{62}{8} = p^{5} + \frac{5}{8} p^{4} - p^{3} + \frac{25}{8} p^{2} - 17 p + \frac{31}{4}$
