The exaggerated immune response of the body to certain foreign substances in the environment is called allergy.

These foreign substances (antigens) are called allergens as they induce allergic responses.

Pollen grains, animal dander, mites in dust are some of the common allergens.

After entering the body, the allergens bind with IgE antibodies secreted by the B cells.

The IgE antibodies bound to allergens migrate into the tissue fluid and bind to specialised receptor molecules on the mast cells.

The mast cells store inflammatory mediators like serotonin and histamine and mediate inflammatory responses during allergic reactions.

Upon stimulation by allergens, the mast cells release their contents into the surrounding tissues.

These chemical mediators, histamine and serotonin produce symptoms which include sneezing, watery eyes, running nose and difficulty in breathing, sore throat, itching, rashes etc.

Fibroblasts are cells present in the connective tissues and they secrete fibres. The fibres are of two types majorly, white collagen fibres and yellow elastic fibres.

IgA antibodies are not involved in allergic reactions, rather they are found in secretions like milk, saliva etc.
