Suppose the number of books purchased on 1st day is x
$\therefore$ The number of books purchased on 2nd day is 4x
$\therefore$ x + 4x + 8 = 38
or 5x = 38 - 8 = 30
$\therefore$ $x=\frac{30}{5}=6$ and 4x = 24
