The conversion of methyl bromide to methanol is through SN2 mechanism. The conversion of tertiary butyl bromide to tertiary butanol is through SN1 mechanism. Tertiary butyl bromide is a tertiary alkyl halide. Tertiary alkyl halides undergo SN1 substitution. Methyl halides and primary alkyl halides undergo SN2 substitution.
