Surendranath Banerjea is often called the 'Father of Indian Nationalism'. He cleared the Indian Civil Services Exam in 1869 and was appointed as the Magistrate in Sylhet. He was elected to the Calcutta Municipal Corporation in 1876. He started Indian Association in 1876 to push for constitutional reforms. He criticised the Vernacular Press Act and the Arms Act imposed by the British through his newspaper, 'The Bengalee'. His autobiography is titled 'A Nation in Making'.
