  • The three layers of epidermis is-
  • Stratum corneum:
  • It is the outermost layer and made of dead cells.
  • Function:
(i) Mechanical protection.
(ii) Prevents entry of germs.
(iii) Prevents loss of water.
  • Granular layer:
  • It is the middle layer and made of flattened cells.
  • Function:
(i) Gives rise to outermost cornified
layer.
  • Malpighian layer:
  • It is the innermost and dividing layer of the skin.
  • Function:
(i) Malpighian layer contains the cells
called melanocytes which produce
the pigment melanin.
