Question

I got a question in my class test. The question was:With the help of three examples, explain the movement of air.I wrote the answer as the following :
  1. Sea breeze:When land gets heated, warm air rises and cold air from sea come towards the land. (The land here is a low pressure area. Sea is a high pressure area. This shoes that air moves from high pressure area to low pressure area.)
  2. Air coming from poles towards equator:Equator area receive high heat from the sun. As a result,it becomes a low pressure area and rises up. The cold air from the polar regions come towards the equator . (Here, polar region is a region of high pressure.)
  3. No winds at hill stations:On hill ststions, there will be no wind because there is high air pressure.Air moves from a region of high air pressure to low air pressure. So, there will not be any wind in hill stations.
Is this correct? If not,why not??

Solution

First of all your attempt to answer this question goes really well.I can understand you studied by understanding deeply.your 1st 2 examples are correct & you explained it really well. But at hilly regions will do have wind .At hilly areas pressure will be low and at sea level regions pressure will be high comparing to hilly regions.so wind will flow from hill to sea level region.
NOTE:Pressure is proportional to the mass of air column above that level,at hilly areas mass of air column above that level will be less .
That's the reason at hilly regions, pressure is low

Hope you understand
