When ethanol is warmed $(60^{o} C)$ with iodine in the presence of an alkali ( $N a O H$ or ${N a}_{2} {C O}_{3}$ ), iodoform is obtained
$C_{2} H_{5} O H E t h a n o l + 4 I_{2} + 6 N a O H ⟶ C H I_{3} I o d o f o r m + H C O O N a + 5 N a I + 5 H_{2} O$
(ii) The product formed will be biphenyl and sodium chloride $(N a C l)$
