Question

(i) If x=322×23-4, find the value of x−2.
(ii) If x=45-2÷142, find the value of x−1.

Solution

(i) First, we have to find x.

x = 322×23-4 = 322×324 = 326 --->(a−1 = 1/a)

Hence, x−2 is:

x-2 = 326-2 = 32-12 = 2312 --->(a−1 = 1/a)

(ii) First, we have to find x.
x=left(frac{4}{5} right )^{-2} div left(frac{1}{4}right)^{2} ---> ((a/b)n = (an)/(bn))
=left(frac{4^{-2}}{5^{-2}} right ) times4^2
=frac{4^{0}}{5^{-2}}
=frac{1}{5^{-2}} ---> (a0 = 1)
Hence, the value of x−1 is:
x^{-1}=left (frac{1}{5^{-2}} right )^{-1}
=left (5^2 right )^{-1} --->(a−1 = 1/a)
=frac{1}{5^{2}} --->(a−1 = 1/a)
