Question

I know to find the bond angles of neutral molecules. But how do I find bond angles of ions.
E.g How to arrange NO2+ , NO2 and NO2- in increasing order of bond angles?

Solution

The order of bond angels between NO2+, NO2 and NO2will be--
NO2+ > NO2 > NO2
This is due to the fact that NO2+ has no unshared electrons, so it will be linear having bond angel 180deg.In NO2, N-atom has one unshared electron causing repulsion due to which bond angle decreases to 132 degree, but this repulsion will be lesser as compared to NO2-- which has an unshared electron pair causes repulsion more thereby forcing the bond pairs closer and thus decreases the bond angle to 115 degree. So the bond angle follows the above trend.
