Question

Question 11
Show how you would connect three resistors, each of resistance 6Ω, so that the combination has a resistance of
(i) 9Ω?

Open in App
Solution

If we connect the resistors in series, then the equivalent resistance will be the sum of the resistors, i.e., 6Ω+6Ω+6Ω=18Ω, which are not desired. If we connect the resistors in parallel, then the equivalent resistance will be 1R=16+16+16=36=12 that is R=2Ω is also not desired. Hence, we should either connect the two resistors in series or parallel.
(a) Two resistors in parallel

Two 6Ω resistors are connected in parallel. Their equivalent resistance will be
R=6×66+6=3Ω
The third 6Ω resistor is in series with 3Ω.
Hence, the equivalent resistance of the circuit is 6Ω+3Ω=9Ω.
