The President of India has the power to declare an ‘Emergency’. During this time, the normal functioning of democratic machinery is suspended. There are three kinds of emergencies: National or General, Constitutional, and Financial.

A National Emergency was declared in 1975 by the Indira Gandhi government, when Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the President. It lasted 21 months.
