Question

(i) Why does a bottle of soft drink cool faster when surrounded by ice cubes than by ice cold water, both at 0oC?
(ii) A certain amount of heat Q will warm 1g of material X by 3oC and 1g of material Y by 4oC. Which material has a higher specific heat capacity?

Solution

(i) A bottle of soft drink cool faster when surrounded by ice cubes than by ice cold water because 1g of ice at 0oC takes 336J of heat energy from the soft drink to melt into water at 0oC. Thus the soft drink loses an additional 336J of heat energy for 1g ice at 0oC than for 1g ice-cold water at 0oC. Therefore cooling produced by 1g ice at 0oC is more than that by 1g water at 0oC.
(ii) Specific heat capacity =QmΔT
Specific heat capacity 1ΔT
where $ \Delta T$ is the change in temperature. The specific heat capacity is more for the material which is having more change in temperature.
So material X has a higher specific heat capacity.
