Question

(i) Why does a bottle of soft drink cool faster when surrounded by ice cubes than by ice-cold water, both at 0°C?

(ii) A certain amount of heat Q will warm 1g of material X by 3°C and 1gof material Y by 4°C. Which material has a higher specific heat capacity?

Solution

(i) 1. Soft drinks cool faster when it surrounded by ice cubes than cold water because 1g of ice cubes take more heat energy 336J to melt into water.

2. Soft drinks cool faster in ice cubes due to their more specific heat.

(ii) Step 1: Given data

Mass of material X=1g

Mass of material Y=1g

Temperature of X=3°C

Temperature of Y=4°C

Finding the material which has a higher specific heat capacity.

Step 2: Heat energy of the substance

As we know, the heat energy

Q=mCt

C=Qmt

Specificheatcapacity=Qmt

Specificheatcapacityα1t

  1. Specific heat capacity is inversely proportional to changes in temperature.
  2. If the temperature is more than specific heat capacity will be less. So, it is clearly visible that material X has less temperature therefore it has more specific capacity than material Y.
