(i) The world is in danger of facing a severe water shortage in the coming future because:

1. The overexploitation of underground water has resulted in the lowering of the water table.

2. The increase in population has led to water scarcity.

(ii) The government should encourage building of small dams, tanks and other reservoirs for collecting water. This will not only meet the water demand of the people without harming the environment but also recharge the groundwater level.
