Solution

(i) The reaction for the combustion of Ethane is given below:

2C2H6(g)Ethane+7O2(g)Oxygen4CO2(g)carbondioxide+6H2O(g)Water

(ii) Ethane can be oxidized as follows:

(1) When a mixture of EthaneC2H6(g) and oxygen in the ratio 9:1 by volume is compressed to about 120 atm pressure and passed over Copper tubes at 475K, Ethyl alcohol(C2H5OH(aq)) is formed.

The reaction is given below:

2C2H6(g)Ethane+O2(g)OxygenCu-tubes,475K120atm2C2H5OH(aq)Ethanol

(2) When a mixture of Ethane and Oxygen is passed through heated Molybdenum monoxide (MoO), the mixture is oxidized to EthanalCH3CHO(aq).

The reaction is given below:

C2H6(g)Ethane+O2(g)OxygenMoOCH3CHO(aq)Ethanal+H2O(l)Water

(3) When a mixture of Ethane and Oxygen is passed through Manganese based compound, the mixture is oxidized to Ethanoic acid.

The reaction is given below:

2C2H6(g)Ethane+3O2(g)OxygenMncompound2CH3COOH(aq)Ethanoicacid+2H2O(l)Water
