Since the carbocation formed at the position near to the −OCH3 group is more stable due to the +M effect of −OCH3 group hence Cl− adds to that part only to give the major product A.NaI in dry acetone gives an SN2 reaction and thus I− nucleophile attacks the carbon atom containing Cl leaving group to give major product B.
