In response to damage or trauma tissues and platelets release thromboplastin which in presence of Ca++ ions causes conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Thrombin causes polymerisation of fibrinogen molecules to fibrin thread. Normally blood clotting takes 3-6 minutes.
