Oogenesis (process of formation of mature female gamete) is initiated during embryonic stage to form oogonia.
Oogonia undergo mitosis and differentiation to form primary oocyte. The primary oocyte undergoes prophase-I of meiosis-I and gets arrested at this stage.
The primary oocyte completes meiosis-I prior to ovulation. It is an unequal division resulting in the formation of a large haploid secondary oocyte and a tiny first polar body.
Secondary oocyte completes meiosis-II to form ovum and second polar body.
