Sodium salts of carboxylic acids on heating with soda lime (mixture of sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide) gives alkanes which contain one carbon atom less than the carboxylic acid.
This is decarboxylation i.e elimination of ${C O}_{2}$ from carboxylic acid.
