Question

Identify the Cation: To solution Z, a small quantity of Sodium hydroxide solution is added and then in excess.

A white precipitate is formed which remains insoluble?

Open in App
Solution

The Cation present is Ca2+(Calcium ion)

The solution Z is calcium chloride solution.

When sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solution is added to the Calcium chloride solution it gives a white precipitate of Ca(OH)2 and sodium chloride is formed.

CaCl2 (aq) + 2NaOH(aq) ⇢ 2NaCl (aq) + Ca(OH)2 (s)

The white precipitate formed is Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) which is insoluble in excess sodium hydroxide.
