Question

Identify the compounds oxidised and reduced in the following reaction: H2S + Cl2 → 2HCl + S

Open in App
Solution

H2S + Cl2 → 2HCl + S

Hydrogen sulphide Chlorine Hydrochloric acid Sulphur

Here oxidation state of S in H2S is -2 and that of Cl in Cl2 is 0 at reactant side but oxidation state of Cl in HCl is -1 and that of S in S is 0.

So, we can say that H2S is getting oxidised since its oxidation number is increasing and Cl2 is getting reduced since its oxidation number is decreasing.
