Manganese competes with elements such as iron, calcium and magnesium for absorption. Thus, excess of manganese may result in deficiency on magnesium, calcium & iron elements. It also competes with magnesium for binding with enzymes. Manganese also tends to inhibit translocation of calcium in shoot.

The onset of manganese toxicity can be observed as appearance of brown spots and chlorotic (yellow appearance due to insufficient chlorophyll) veins in the leaves.
