The process of converting the atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates and nitrites is known as nitrogen fixation(A). These are done by certain nitrogen fixing bacteria found in the roots of leguminous plants.
When decomposition of plants or animals occur, organic nitrogen is converted into inorganic components like ammonia. This process is called as ammonification(B).
Conversion of ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate is called nitrification (C).
Certain bacteria convert nitrogen compounds back into the atmospheric nitrogen. This process is called denitrification(D).
