The first reaction is preparation of higher alkynes from lower alkynes :
By treating it with sodium metal at high temperature or with sodamide (NaNH2) resulting in the formation of its sodium salt, followed by the reaction with alkyl halide.
And the second reaction is Birch reduction: Alkyne in presence of liq. Na/NH3 or liq. Li/NH3 undergoes Birch reduction to form trans alkene products. This reagent gives only trans product.
