Solution

A colourless gas which fumes strongly in air and has a sharp biting smell is Ammonia (NH3)

When a rod dipped in Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is brought near ammonia, dense white fumes or smog of Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) are produced.

  • NH3(aq)+HCl(g)NH4Cl(s)(Ammonia)(Hydrochloricacid)(Ammoniumchloride)(whitefumes)
