Sieve tube cells are solely responsible for the transportation of the food material (sucrose) from the source i.e., leaves and storage organs to the regions of need. Tracheids are generally unicellular, long and thin, may have pits in their walls but they have imperforate end walls. They occur in the seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms. Vessels are multicellular, limited in their growth, and are joined end to end to form continuous tubular structures with perforations in their cross walls. Water and minerals are efficiently conducted through these perforations. Vessels are present in most of the angiosperms. The hypodermal cells are thick-walled, lignified and sclerenchymatous. Sclereids are found in fruit or seed walls and also in the flesh of apples and pineapple. The cells may be living or dead, but short and variously shaped; cell wall is heavily thickened with many pit lines unevenly distributed.
