Gigantism
The image shows pituitary gland. It has two lobes called anterior and the posterior pituitary lobes. Somatotropin is secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. If the production of this hormone increases during the growth phase, it leads to the excessive growth of the body. This condition is called gigantism. The hyposecretion of this hormone during the growth phase leads to a condition called dwarfism.
The posterior lobe of the pituitary gland does not produce any hormone but it stores and secretes the hormones produced by the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus.
