Solution

Mixtures

  • Sustances which contain more than one components that are not chemically linked.
  • When the components mixed to form a mixture, they do not lose the identity even in the mixture form.
  • The components can be separated by physical methods
  • Mixtures are of two types, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
Homogeneous mixtureHeterogeneous mixture
The components present in the mixture is difficult to identify physicallyThe components present in the mixture, physically separated
The composition and appearence are same throughoutThe composition and appearence is not same throughout
Generally, the components are in the same phase, i.e..,homo means sameThe components can be in different phase, i.e..,hetero means different
Example: air, sugar solutionExample: oil and water, sand and sugar

By analysing the properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures we can classify the substances into homogeneous mixtures:

Homogeneous mixture: soda water

Starch solution, soap solution, milk comes under heterogeneous mixture since the particles present in this mixture are not in uniform composition and remain physically separated.
