Tongue is made up of voluntary muscles. It contains gustatoreceptors which are sensory receptors. They only taste food.
Taste receptors cluster in small mucous membrane projections called papillae. There are 4 types of papillae on the tongue: Filiform, circumvallate, foliate and fungiform.
Taste buds are present on all of these except the filiform papillae. They are not the sites of taste sensation.
