Question

identify the largest and smallest ion given below: O2-,F-,Na+,Mg 2+

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The negative sign means the number of electrons and a positive sign means a lack of electrons.

O2- with atomic number 8 has 8+2 = 10 electrons F- with atomic number 9 has 9+ 1 = 10 electrons Na+ with atomic number 11 has 11-1 = 10 electrons Mg2+ with atomic number 1w has 12-2 = 10 electrons Since, all these ions have 10 electrons in their shell therefore these are isoelectronic species. The more + the charge , the smaller the ionic radius . Remember that negative means adding electrons and these lectrons go in the outermost shells. Also, when an atom loses electrons, it attract even more tightly to the ones it has left. The ionic radius will decreases. The order of size : Mg2+ < Na+ < F- < O2-

The largest ion is the O2- nad the smallest one is Mg2+
