The correct option is A Hardly I
When the four sentences are read together, we understand that the sentence is in past tense. When there are two things that happened in the past i.e sat down and knock at the door, we need to show which of the actions happened earlier. So we use simple past for the later event and the past perfect for the earlier one. The correct form of option A is, therefore, 'Hardly had I'.
