Identify the parts labelled I to IV.
Dendrites, Soma, Axon, Axon Terminals
A neuron is composed of these major parts:
Dendrites (I) are cytoplasmic extensions from the neuron cell body that typically receive signals from other neurons.
Cell body or soma (II) vary in size from 5 to 100 micrometers diameter. It contains nucleus, organelles like mitochondria responsible for producing energy and Nissl’s granules made up of rough endoplasmic reticulum.
Axon (III) is a thick extrusion of cytoplasm that forms the primary conductor of nerve impulse. Axons are covered by a fatty, whitish substance called myelin sheath, present around the axon.
Axon terminals (IV) are little knobs that contain tiny holding membranes called vesicles. These vesicles contain special compounds called neurotransmitters, that are released when a nerve impulse reaches the axon terminals.
