  • Pure substances are of two types: elements and compounds.

Elements:

  • Element is a pure substance that is made up of the same kind of atoms.
  • For example gold, iron. silver, etc.

Compound:

  • Compound is a pure substance that is made up of a combination of two or more elements combined in a fixed ratio.
  • For example water, carbon dioxide, etc.

Oxygen, Common salt, distilled water, and gold are pure substances.

Oxygen: It is an element, made up of the same kind of atoms.

Common salt: It is a compound that is made up of sodium and chlorine combined in a fixed ratio.

Distilled water: Distilled water is pure water and a compound made up of oxygen and hydrogen which are combined in a fixed ratio.

Gold: Gold is an element, that is made up of the same kind of atom.

Mixture:

  • Mixtures are impure substances that are made up of a combination of different substances.

Honey, air, petrol, and soil are a mixture.

Honey is a mixture. It contains sugar, nectar, etc.

Air is a homogeneous mixture of different gases.

Petrol is a mixture of different compounds.

Soil is a mixture of different organic and inorganic compounds.
