Synapsis takes place during the zygotene substage of prophase I of meiosis I due to the formation of a synaptonemal complex which keeps the two homologous pairs together. The two chromatids of each pair are clearly distinct and are together known as tetrads.
In leptotene substage, the chromosomes appear as a fine thin thread like long filaments.
In pachytene substage, crossing over between synapsed homologous chromosomes takes place.
In diplotene substage, the synaptic forces come to an end and chromosomes start separating by the process called disjunction. Separation takes place at the points called chiasmata.
