Question

Identify the value of X, if X molal solution of a compound in benzene has mole fraction of solute equal to 0.2

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

Mole fraction of X solute=0.2

Step 2: Calculating molality

Mole fraction=numberofmolesofsolutenumberofmolesofsolvent

=nBnA+nB

Let the total moles=1

Mole fraction of Benzene=1-0.20.8

Molar mass of benzene=78gmol-1

Molality=1000×x2x1×m1

where x2=mole fraction of solute, x1=the mole fraction of benzene, and m1=the molar mass of benzene.

Molality=1000×0.20.8×7820057.43.205molesKg-1

Therefore, molality or X=3.2molesKg-1
