Identify whether the following statements are true/false.
(iii) Process of coagulation starts with the release of a substance from RBCs.
Process of coagulation starts with the release of a substance from platelets.
∙ The injured tissue cells and platelets disintegrate at the site of injury and release a substance known as thrombokinase or thromboplastin.
∙ The thrombokinase acts as an enzyme which converts prothrombin (inactive) of the plasma into thrombin (active), with the help of calcium ions present in the plasma.
∙ In the presence of calcium ions, the soluble fibrinogen of the plasma is converted to insoluble fibrin by thrombin.
∙ This fibrin forms a network of threads at the injury site.
∙ Blood cells get trapped in this network of fibrin, the network then squeezes out the rest of the plasma in the form of a clear liquid known as serum. The solid mass left behind is known as a clot.
