Question

If (0, −3) and (0, 3) are the two vertices of an equilateral triangle, find the coordinates of its third vertex. [CBSE 2014]

Open in App
Solution

Let the given points be A(0, −3) and B(0, 3). Suppose the coordinates of the third vertex be C(x, y).

Now, ∆ABC is an equilateral triangle.

∴ AB = BC = CA

0-02+-3-32=x-02+y-32=x-02+y--32 (Distance formula)

Squaring on both sides, we get

36=x2+y-32=x2+y+32

x2+y-32=x2+y+32 and x2+y-32=36

Now,

x2+y-32=x2+y+32y2-6y+9=y2+6y+9-12y=0y=0

Putting y = 0 in x2+y-32=36, we get

x2+0-32=36x2=36-9=27x=±27=±33

Thus, the coordinates of the third vertex are 33, 0 or -33, 0.
