Solution

If 2 is root of equation 3 x squared plus p x minus 8
Then put x=2
3 left parenthesis 2 right parenthesis squared plus p left parenthesis 2 right parenthesis minus 8 equals 0 12 plus 2 p minus 8 equals 0 4 plus 2 p equals 0 p equals negative 2

So the equation, 4 x squared minus 2 p x plus k will be equal to 4 x squared plus 4 x plus k equals 0

For the equation a x squared plus b x plus c equals 0 to have equal roots, D=0
where D = b squared minus 4 a c

D= 16-16k=0
k=1
Hence the equation has equal roots when k=1
