Question

If 25 ml of acetone mixed with 150 ml of water to form an aqueous solution, then calculate the volume percentage of solution?

Open in App
Solution

Concentration of solution

  • The relative amount of solute and solvent present in a solution is known as concentration of solution.
  • Concentration of solution can be expressed in number of ways. i.e mass percentage, volume percentage, mass by volume percentage, strength of solution.

Volume percentage

  • The number of parts by volume of the solute dissolved in 100 parts by volume of the solution

Volume%=(Volumeofsolute/Volumeofsolution)x100

Volume of acetone given (solute) = 25 ml

Volume of water (solvent) = 150 ml

Volume of solution = 175 ml

Substituting in equation

Volume % = (25 / 175) x 100

Volume % = 0.154 x 100 = 15.4 %

Therefore, Volume % = 15.4 %
