When 3-Methylnitrophenol,is treated with dilute nitric acid then a mixture of ortho and para isomer i.e., 3-Methyl-2-nitrophenol and 3-Methyl-4-nitrophenol will be produced. On further nitration dinitration occurs and product formed will be 3-Methyl-2,4-dinitrophenol.
