Given $36 : x :: x : 16$ can be written as $\frac{36}{x} = \frac{x}{16}$
$\Rightarrow x^{2} = 36 \times 16$
$\Rightarrow x^{2} = 6^{2} \times 4^{2}$
$\Rightarrow x = 6 \times 4$
$∴ x = 24$
